Hunza and Skardu can be combined into one excellent northern Pakistan journey, but the trip works only when the road connection is treated as part of the itinerary rather than an inconvenience between two sightseeing lists. For most international travellers, 10–14 days in northern Pakistan gives the two regions enough room to feel distinct.
How the two regions differ
Hunza is organised around a relatively continuous Karakoram Highway corridor: Central Hunza leads naturally towards Attabad, Gulmit, Hussaini and Passu. Baltistan spreads its experiences in several directions from Skardu, including Shigar, Deosai, Khaplu and Kharmang. That difference should shape the itinerary.
How many days?
| Available time | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| 6–7 days | Choose Hunza or Skardu rather than rushing both |
| 8–9 days | Possible, but selective and road-time heavy |
| 10–12 days | Good balance for both regions |
| 13–14+ days | Allows side valleys, slower travel and flexibility |
A sensible route
A common structure is Islamabad → Skardu → Baltistan exploration → road to Hunza → Central and Upper Hunza → Gilgit/Islamabad, or the reverse. The exact direction should respond to flight availability, road conditions and the rest of the Pakistan itinerary.
Do not underestimate the transfer day
The Skardu–Hunza road journey is a real mountain travel day. Construction, traffic, weather and stops can alter timing. Do not plan a full sightseeing programme at both ends of the same transfer.
What deserves time in Hunza?
Give Central Hunza a proper heritage day and Upper Hunza its own day or more. Attabad, Gulmit, Hussaini and Passu should not be compressed into a rapid photo circuit. Read our Hunza travel guide for the region in depth.
What deserves time in Baltistan?
Use Skardu as a base for geographically coherent excursions. Shigar deserves its own attention; Deosai is a substantial seasonal high-altitude day; Khaplu is better with enough time to appreciate eastern Baltistan rather than as a rushed add-on.
Flights and contingency
Mountain flights can save time but are weather-sensitive. Avoid placing an inflexible international departure immediately after a domestic mountain flight without a fallback plan.
When should you choose only one?
If you have less than a week in the north, strong interests in one region, young children who dislike long transfers, or a trekking programme already using several days, choosing one region can produce a better trip.

FAQ
Which should come first?
There is no universal answer. Flight availability, season, road conditions and your onward route should determine the direction.
Can I do both in seven days?
Technically possible, but usually too compressed for a first visit. Choosing one region is often more rewarding.
Is the road journey scenic?
Yes, but it is still a long mountain transfer and should be planned as such.
