Private cultural festival tour with basic mountain camping

Shandur Polo Festival Private Tour – 10 Days / 9 Nights

Experience the Shandur Polo Festival on a private ten-day journey through Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghizer Valley, Phander Lake and the high mountain plateau of Shandur Pass. The festival brings together freestyle polo teams from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, with a setting and atmosphere unlike a conventional sporting event.Rather than rushing to the ground for a single match, this itinerary allows time for Ghizer’s villages, the scenery around Phander and up to three festival days, subject to the official event programme. Two nights of pre-arranged high-altitude camping at Shandur place you near the action; simpler accommodation and limited services are part of the experience. The tour is designed for the next officially announced edition. As of October 2026, the 2027 festival dates have not been confirmed by the authorities. Departure dates, match access, campsite arrangements and the operating route must be reconfirmed before a booking is accepted. No fixed departure, admission ticket, match schedule or accommodation is guaranteed in advance.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Islamabad

Arrive at Islamabad International Airport and meet your private driver for the transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is flexible, allowing time to recover from your journey or explore a nearby part of the capital. Your coordinator reviews the planned Gilgit flight and the festival arrangements currently confirmed by local organizers. Overnight Islamabad.

Day 2

Fly to Gilgit and Drive to Ghakuch

Take the planned flight to Gilgit, subject to airline schedules and mountain weather. Meet your driver and continue west through the river valleys to Ghakuch, the main town of Ghizer. Stop at safe viewpoints and enjoy an easy afternoon after the flight. If flying is not possible, the longer road alternative may require a change to the itinerary. Overnight Ghakuch.

Day 3

Gupis and Phander Lake

Follow the Ghizer River corridor past villages and mountain slopes, stopping around Gupis for scenery and refreshments. Continue toward Phander, where the lake and surrounding grasslands provide a peaceful contrast to the busy festival days ahead. Settle into locally available accommodation and prepare suitable warm layers for Shandur's altitude. The day is intentionally unhurried. Overnight Phander.

Day 4

Phander to Shandur: Festival Opening

Depart Phander early and travel toward Shandur Pass along the mountain road, subject to safe access and event arrangements. Settle into your pre-arranged campsite and join the opening festival atmosphere if the official programme follows its usual three-day format. Watch freestyle polo where access is permitted, with time for photographs and local cultural activities. Overnight basic Shandur camp.

Day 5

Shandur Polo Festival: Matches and Culture

Spend the day at the polo ground, following the actual fixture schedule issued by festival organizers. Observe the fast, traditional style of mountain polo and enjoy the atmosphere among supporters from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. Cultural performances or evening music may be available, but are not guaranteed. Cold weather, altitude and limited facilities are part of this remote experience. Overnight basic Shandur camp.

Day 6

Festival Final and Return to Phander

Enjoy the final festival day, ideally including the headline polo match if the announced schedule and viewing access permit. The atmosphere can be especially busy, so timing and departure arrangements remain flexible. After the programme, return toward Phander with your driver, allowing for heavy traffic and road delays. A schedule change may require reordering this day. Overnight Phander.

Day 7

Phander to Ghakuch

Leave Phander after breakfast and retrace the scenic Ghizer Valley road through Gupis toward Ghakuch. Make selected stops for riverside views, village landscapes and local refreshments rather than treating the transfer as a race. This day also provides some flexibility if the festival schedule or Shandur road access changes. Enjoy a relaxed evening back in Ghakuch. Overnight Ghakuch.

Day 8

Ghakuch to Gilgit

Return east to Gilgit along the river corridor, with stops selected around road conditions and your interests. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a gentle walk, a market visit or rest at the hotel. Your coordinator reconfirms the next day's domestic flight and discusses contingencies in case mountain weather disrupts operations. This is a buffer-oriented travel day, not a rushed excursion. Overnight Gilgit.

Day 9

Fly to Islamabad and Relax

Transfer to Gilgit Airport for the planned flight to Islamabad, subject to confirmed tickets and weather. After arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy the capital at your own pace, whether relaxing, visiting a café or exploring a local market. If the flight is cancelled, a road journey can take considerably longer and may affect your international departure. Overnight Islamabad.

Day 10

Islamabad Departure

Your private driver transfers you to Islamabad International Airport at the agreed time for your onward flight. The ten-day private Shandur Polo Festival journey concludes here. All festival dates, match schedules, road access, campsite arrangements and domestic flights remain subject to confirmation; travellers with inflexible international connections should consider additional buffer days when finalizing their travel plans.

Accommodation and comfort

Nine nights: Islamabad (2), Ghakuch (2), Phander (2), Shandur campsite (2) and Gilgit (1). Shandur camping is basic, high-altitude and weather-sensitive; toilets, heating, power and mobile coverage can be limited. All actual arrangements depend on the official festival dates, available campsites and supplier confirmation.

Private transport and local coordination

Planned Islamabad–Gilgit–Islamabad domestic flights, subject to weather and airline operations. Private road vehicle and driver for Gilgit, Ghizer, Phander and Shandur. Access roads can be rough, crowded or disrupted during the festival; a suitable 4x4 may be required for the final approach, subject to current conditions.

Important travel notes

2027 Shandur Polo Festival dates have not yet been officially announced as of October 2026. The 2026 festival ran 11–13 June; this does not establish dates for future years. Festival attendance, fixtures, seating and cultural performances depend on organizers and weather. Shandur Pass is around 3,700 metres: altitude, cold nights and basic camping are important considerations. Travellers should consult a clinician about altitude risk, particularly with relevant medical conditions. Mountain flights can be cancelled, and road alternatives require additional days. Avoid fixed international connections immediately after the return flight. Festival fees, campsite facilities, permits and inclusions must be confirmed in a written quotation. No fixed departures or guaranteed access are advertised.
