Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive in Islamabad
Arrive at Islamabad International Airport and meet your private driver for the hotel transfer. The afternoon is intentionally relaxed after international travel. If your arrival time allows, explore a nearby café or viewpoint before a short briefing on the mountain flight, Astore road conditions and seasonal Deosai crossing. Overnight in Islamabad.
Fly to Gilgit and Drive to Astore
Take the planned morning flight to Gilgit, subject to weather and airline operations. Continue privately toward Astore via the Karakoram Highway and Thalichi, following the river valley into a quieter part of Gilgit-Baltistan. Stop for photographs where safe, and arrive with time to settle into your guesthouse. Overnight in Astore.
Rama Meadows and Forest Walks
Travel by suitable jeep up the winding mountain track to Rama Meadows. Spend time among the forest, grassy clearings and mountain views, with a relaxed picnic or short guided walk if conditions allow. The day is deliberately unhurried, providing time to enjoy the surroundings rather than rushing toward the higher lake. Overnight in the Astore or Rama area.
Optional Rama Lake Hike and Astore Valley
Return toward Rama Meadows for an optional hike to Rama Lake, normally involving a substantial walk beyond the jeep approach. Walking time and trail conditions vary; guests preferring a gentler day can stay around the meadows and explore nearby village landscapes. Prepare warm clothing and review the next day's park and road status. Overnight in Astore.
Chilim, Sheosar Lake and Deosai Crossing to Skardu
Depart early by 4x4 through the Astore Valley toward Chilim Checkpost, then enter Deosai National Park if the seasonal road and park are open. Pause near Sheosar Lake and cross the high plateau via the permitted route, with photography stops chosen around weather and daylight. Descend past Sadpara Lake into Skardu for a well-earned rest. Overnight Skardu.
Skardu Valley at an Easy Pace
Enjoy a gentler day after the high-altitude crossing. Explore the Skardu valley, with options including Lower Kachura, scenic viewpoints or a relaxed local cultural stop depending on your interests. Keep the itinerary flexible for rest, photography and recovery from the previous day's long 4x4 drive. Your coordinator reconfirms the return flight and road alternatives. Overnight Skardu.
Fly from Skardu to Islamabad
Transfer to Skardu Airport for the planned domestic flight to Islamabad, subject to confirmed tickets and mountain weather. Check into your hotel on arrival and enjoy a relaxed final evening in the capital. If the flight is cancelled, the longer road alternative may require additional days; the final international connection should therefore allow a realistic buffer. Overnight Islamabad.
Departure from Islamabad
After breakfast, transfer privately to Islamabad International Airport for your onward flight. The journey concludes with memories of Astore's forests, Rama's mountain scenery and Deosai's immense alpine plateau. Departure logistics remain flexible around flight schedules, and extra nights can be added when weather resilience or a more leisurely pace is important.
Accommodation and comfort
Seven nights: Islamabad (2), Astore or Rama area (3), Skardu (2). Hotels and guesthouses vary in comfort; the Rama area has limited facilities compared with larger towns. No Deosai overnight camping is required.
Private transport and local coordination
Planned Islamabad–Gilgit and Skardu–Islamabad flights subject to weather. Private transfers and a suitable local 4x4 for Rama and the Deosai crossing. The high-altitude road is rough and seasonal. Road contingency routes require additional time.
Important travel notes
Season: late June to September is usually the safest planning window for the complete Deosai crossing, subject to official road and park opening. Deosai National Park entry fees/permits are payable as applicable. Sheosar Lake is over 4,000 metres, with altitude-related health risks, strong sun and cold winds even in summer. Rama Lake generally requires walking beyond the meadow; do not promise vehicle access to the lakeshore. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Flights to Gilgit and from Skardu may be cancelled by mountain weather; avoid tight international connections. If the Deosai road is closed, the Skardu transfer may need the longer Jaglot route or a revised overnight schedule.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time for the Astore and Deosai tour?
Late June through September is generally the best period for the full seasonal Deosai crossing, but exact opening dates depend on snow and official road conditions.
Is the tour private?
Yes. It is a private journey for your own party, with flexible pacing and no fixed group departures.
Can we drive all the way to Rama Lake?
Usually not. The vehicle takes you toward Rama Meadows; visiting Rama Lake typically requires an additional hike, subject to the trail and your fitness.
How difficult is the Rama Lake walk?
The walk can be moderate, with uneven ground and altitude. The itinerary offers a relaxed meadow alternative for guests who prefer not to hike.
Does the tour cross Deosai National Park?
Yes, if the Chilim–Deosai–Skardu road is officially open and safe. The itinerary includes a contingency if conditions prevent crossing.
Is a 4x4 required?
A suitable 4x4 is planned for the rough Rama approach and the Deosai plateau crossing.
How high is Deosai?
Much of the plateau is around 4,000 metres, and Sheosar Lake is above 4,100 metres. Travellers should be aware of altitude risks.
Will we see Himalayan brown bears?
Wildlife sightings are possible but never guaranteed. Visitors must follow national park rules and keep a safe distance.
Are park fees included?
Park fees, permits and inclusions are confirmed in the written quotation based on current official requirements.
Are the domestic flights guaranteed?
No. Gilgit and Skardu flights are weather-sensitive. Road alternatives may take considerably longer and require extra nights.
